CORONAVIRUS

March 16, 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

Coronavirus  (COVID-19) update

Following a weekend of dramatic news and a real concern for everyone’s safety, I felt it was important to write to you about the school’s current position regarding the Coronavirus.

At present the school is remaining open. This may change as the virus continues to spread but we are taking the daily advice from the government and currently we have been told not to shut;-

“The Chief Medical Officer has advised that the impact of closing schools on both children’s education and on the workforce will be substantial, but the benefit to public health may not be. Decisions on future advice to schools will be taken based on the latest and best scientific evidence, which at this stage suggests children are a lower risk group.” (Department for Education 13th March 2020)

At present evidence is also showing that children are at the lowest risk when it comes to catching the Coronavirus.  Children make up a very small percentage of worldwide cases of the virus and the symptoms are nearly always extremely mild.  Currently it is the older members of our population who are most at risk or anyone with an underlying health condition.

So from a school perspective we are encouraging everyone to continue attending school and to follow all the government advice. This includes the importance of regular handwashing, covering your mouth when coughing and using disposable tissues when you sneeze or blow your nose.  I have reminded all staff and children this morning about the importance of good hygiene and hand washing.  We will continue to closely supervise this.

It is also important to self-isolate if you, your children or anyone you have been in close contact with has a high temperature or shows other symptoms of the virus.  If you are in any doubt then our advice is to call 111 and they will advise you further.  In this case please do not worry about our usual rules on attendance, you will not receive a letter or a fine for being worried about the Coronavirus.  However please keep us informed.

We have also taken the regrettable decision to stop all external trips and events. This will reduce the amount of contact that the children will have at larger gatherings and the amount of travel to potentially spread the virus.  All after school clubs, within school, will continue but there will be no trips out until further notice.  This will include the Year 5 trip to London, Reception Classes trips and all sporting events.  Once I have more information, I will let you know about any refunds or whether we will be able to reschedule the trips at a later date.

If you have any further concerns or worries, then please come and discuss them with me.  I have spoken to many parents/carers this morning and we will work through this unique situation together.  This is something that we have never faced before and we will continue to take advice from professionals in the government.  I would also like to thank many of you for your words of support and rational approach to this situation.

I would urge you not to pay too much attention to the panic or misinformation that is emerging on social media.  However if you see anything that concerns you please contact me straight away.

There is a meeting this morning with the Department for Education and as soon as I hear any other important news I will let you know.  The quickest way to do this is by Parentmail, so if you are not receiving this please let the office know as soon as possible.  I will also ensure that all relevant information is available on the school website.

Thank you for you cooperation.

Yours faithfully
